Answer:

A) Primary productivity is directly proportional to the amount of carbon dioxide, sunlight and water and is inversely proportional to respiratory losses.

b) Consumption of oxygen is elementary step for decomposition which is directly related to the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Answer (a)

Primary productivity is used to describe the rate at which plants and other photosynthetic organisms produce organic compounds or organic matter or biomass in an ecosystem.

It has two aspects =

1. Gross Primary Productivity (GPP)

2. Net Primary Productivity (NPP)

NPP = GPP - R ( respiration loss)

Factors that influence it are :-

Light.

Temperature.

Species composition.

Availability of nutrients and photosynthetic capacity.

Species succession.

Answer (b)

Decomposition is an oxygen consuming process thus it is directly proportional to the concentration of the oxygen in the environment. It is controlled by the chemical composition of detritus and climatic conditions. The decomposition rate increases when detritus is rich in lignin and chitin while it is quicker if the detritus contains nitrogen and water-soluble substances such as sugars.

Hope this helps you.
