(a) Explain why, though both a plane mirror and a sheet of paper reflect light but we can see the image of our face in a plane mirror but not in a sheet of paper.
(b) The image in a plane mirror is virtual and laterally inverted. What does this statement mean?

Explanation:

(a)

  • Due to a regular reflection occurs from an airplane mirror, Which has a flat surface.
  • Since the particles of the rough surface face one way, only one direction reflects a beam of parallel light rays falling upon it as a beam of parallel light rays.
  • When created backwards these rays intersect to form a virtual image of the light source.
  • However a parallel beam of incident light is mirrored in different directions in the case of a rough paper (diffused reflection). So the luminous rays don't meet to form an object image.

(b) The given statement means that on a screen the image created by the plane mirror is not producible. So it is a virtual picture. The image formed further shows the right side of an object as the left side and vice-versa. That is called as lateral inversion.

(c) All of the alphabet's capital letters which look the same in a plane mirror are A, H, I, M, 0, T, U, V, W, X and Y
