Question:

A family of 10 purchased tickets to the county fair. Tickets for adults cost $6 and tickets for children cost $3. If the total cost of the tickets was $42, how many family members were adults and children?

Solution:

Let the no. of adults be x and no. of children be y

Cost of ticket if there are x adults = 6x

Cost of ticket if there are y children=3y

According to the question,

6x+3y=42___(i)

And since we know there were 10 members, we have x+y=10___(ii)

Multiply (ii) by 3, we get, 3x+3y=30 ___(iii)

Subtract (i) and (iii),

6x+3y-3x-3y=42-30

6x-3x=12

3x=12

x=4

Putting x=4 in (ii) we get, y=6

So,there were 4 adults and 6 children.
