A family of 17 are trying to get back to their island for Christmas when disaster strikes – their ship hits a rock and will sink in 20 minutes! They have a rescue boat that fits 5 people and can get to the island and back with it in 9 minutes. How many people are able to reach the island without getting wet before the ship sinks?

Number of family members = 17
Time left to sink = 20mins
One boat can accommodate 5 people
Time taken by life boat to take back 5 people to island and return= 9 mins
So ,
we have 20 mins, where 9 mins can be consumed to save 5 people
Time consumed to save 10 people without getting wet = 18 mins
So, till now 10 people are saved and the boat reaches the area of wreckage
People left = 17 - 10 = 7
Time left = 20-18=2 mins
2 mins are enough for 5 members from the rest to get on the boat
So as they are on boat, they have no chances to be wet.
Hence , more 5 people are saved from getting wet
So , all total, (10+5) = 15 people are saved from getting wet.
Rest (17-15) = 2 members are bound to get wet as the ship sinks.
