Once George's watch stopped working at night, which he did not realise at that time. When he woke up the next day it was a foggy winter morning and the time on his watch said it was quarter past eight. He had to be in the city by nine and hence he rushed out of the house. The scene that greeted him outside seemed strange as all the streets were deserted with not a single soul in sight. He went on to ask a patrolling policeman what the time was and it was then that he realised that it was three in the morning, and that his watch had probably stopped working the night before. Hence it was amidst much suspicion from the policemen that he returned back home, and spent a rather anxious early morning, so much so that he vowed to never wake up early ever in his life again after the experience.

Once George's watch stopped working. But he was not aware of it. So the next day he woke up when the watch showed the time as quarter past eight. Actually it was early morning. He had to go to the city at nine so he rushed out. The streets were deserted. He went to a policeman to ask the time, who looked at him suspiciously. He realized that it was three o'clock in the morning. He spent an anxious early morning and vowed never to get up early again.
