Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said, "I have to go to school tomorrow." (Direct)

She said that she had to go to school the next day. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words will have to be made. Also, if the sentence contains an interrogation, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

a) Farhad said to me, "Will you go to school?" (Direct)

  • Farhad asked me if I would go to school. (Indirect)

b) He said to his brother, "What are you doing?" (Direct)

  • He asked his bother what he was doing. (Indirect)

c) He said to me, "Where do you live?" (Direct)

  • He asked me where I lived. (Indirect)

d) Najma said to him, "Have you taken my pen?" (Direct)

  • Najma asked him if he had taken his pen. (Indirect)

e) Sohel said to Rasel, "What are you doing?" (Direct)

  • Sohel asked Rasel what he was doing. (Indirect)

1) She said to me, "Who are you and what do you want?" (Direct)

  • She asked me who I was and what I wanted. (Indirect)

g) The maid said to the old man, "Will you give me some food?" (Direct)

  • The maid asked the old man if he would give her some food. (Indirect)

h) He said to me, "Would you accompany me, please?" (Direct)

1) She said to me, "Did you like my gift?" (Direct)
