farmers one day work= 1/10
his wife's one day work= 1/8
total one day's work= 1/10+1/8
                              => 4+5/40
= 9/40
total work= 40/9 = 4 4/9
ans. total work altogether 4 4/9

Answer:

The farmer takes 10 days to reap the harvest while his wife does the same work in 8 days.

That is to say the farmer does 1/10th of the work in a day while his wife does 1/8th of the work. Together they do (8+10)/(10*8) = 18/80 or 9/40th of the work. So the two together will harvest the field in 40/9 days or 4 and 4/9th of a day, that is less than 4.5 days.
