A farmer has 17 sheep and all but 9 die then 9 are left alive.

A farmer has 17 sheep and all but 9 die

This sentence means that all 17 sheep die  but 9 sheep does not die.

This sentence means that all 17 sheep die  except 9 sheep.

As 9 sheep does not die Hence 9 are left alive.

9 sheep are left alive.

Other Example of using but.

I ate all but banana.

This Means I ate everything except Banana.

This Means I did not eat Banana but ate all other things.

So Correct answer is "9 sheep are left alive".
