A farmer has two fields A and B. He cultivates peas (Pisum sativum) in both the fields.
Field A is covered with nets to keep out birds and insects. Field B is left uncovered.
i) Name the type of pollination that would occur in field ‘A’ and field ‘B’
ii) Which of these fields will give a higher yield?
iii) To raise the next crop, from which field should the seeds be chosen by the farmer.
Give reason to support your answer.

1. b-cross pollination xenogamy
a- self pollination
peas are mainly cleistogamous and are bisexual they mainly do self pollination
2. a as no external agent will affect main genotype of plant
3. a

Both fields are of Pisum sativum A is covered and B is uncovered so

i)Field A is self pollination and field B is cross pollination.

ii)Higher yield in field A.

iii)For next crop seeds must be from field B.

i)Type of pollination in field A is self pollination and in field B is cross pollination.

In field A as it is covered so no external agent interact so pollen of a plant fertilize stigma of same plant hence pollination is self pollination.

In field B uncovered so external reagent interact and are responsible for carrying pollen from one plant to stigma of other plant hence pollination is cross pollination.

ii)Yield is higher in field A as in self pollination is higher because in cross pollination all the pollen grains do not reach stigma of other flowers and incompatibility barriers are also there hence pollen of one species are not able to germinate on stigma of other hence yield is higher in field A.

iii)To raise next crop seeds should be chosen from field B as in field B there is cross pollination which produces better offspring as there is variation and chances that good qualities from both plants are transferred to offspring hence crops must be selected from field B.
