A farmer was unhappy because of his low crop yeild. He Discussed the problem with an agricultural scientist and realised that the soil was either too acidic or too basic. What remedy would you suggest the farmer ro neutralise the soil?

This is an interesting question and is much more difficult to answer then how to neutralize acidic soil. Acid soils are nutralized (or brought to a level adequet for the crop grown) simply by adding AgLime which is sourced from quaries. It takes a lot of product, but is relatively easy to applie and cheap! Lowering pH requires an acidic substance often containing sulfur (sulfur fertilizers, Amonium Sulfate (AMS), and their are some other options) Calcium Sulfate a.k.a Gypsum — the stuff in Sheetrock on your walls) contains a fair amount of sulfide but will only have a negligible impact on pH. AMS acidifies greatly as the Amonium NH4 in it becomes Nitrate NO3 the H4 adds hydrogen (acidic) to the Soil and also grabs oxygen from 3 water molecules H2O (or H-O-H) which releases another 6 Hydrogen molecules.

Elemental sulfur S reacts with Carbon Dioxide CO2 and Oxygen O2 to form formaldehyde CH2O, Sulfate SO4 and 2H acidifying the Soil.
You can also apply sulfuric acid or something containing it. I know of one local substance that is a byproduct of processing corn grain using sulfuric acid — it is a liquid and also contains other nutrients, but does a number on lowering pH and needs to be monitored as I am in an area where lowering pH is not the issue, it is raising.
There are acidic fertilizers and amendments you can find at a local garden center for raising low pH loving plants such as blueberries and African violets, but may only be economical on a small scale.
