The amount 26 Rs. 53 Paisa was written on cheque.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let 'x' be the rupees on cheque and 'y' be the paisa.

But the bank official by mistake gave him 'y' rupees and 'x' paisa.

He spent 0.20 paisa, now remaining amount = y rs. and (x-20) paisa.

It is given that remaining amount is double the amount written on the cheque

∴ y rupees + (x-20) = 2(x rupees and y paisa)

on comparison we get y = 2x,  x-20 = 2y but on solving we shall get x as a negative number which is a contradiction

an other case is also possible

y rupee (x-20) paise = 2(x rupee y paise)

y rupee (x-20) paise = 2(x rupee) 2(y paise)

y rupee (x-20) paise = (2x+1) rupee (2y-100) paise

y = 2x+1,

x - 20 = 2y - 100

on taking y = 2x + 1

in second equation, we get x-20 = 2(2x + 1) - 100

x-20 = 4x + 2 - 100

3x = 78

x = 26,

y = 2(26)+1 = 53

The amount 26 Rs. 53 Paisa was written on the cheque.
