Let the initial amount of toffees received by each be x.

The total received by them at the beginning is :

6x.

When each eats 4 each remains with:

(x - 4)

the total remaining is :

6(x - 4) = 6x - 24

This is thrice the number each had at the beginning.

This equals to 3x.

Equating the two we have :

3x = 6x - 24

6x - 3x = 24

3x = 24

x = 8

The total number the father had initially is :

6 × 8 = 48

48 Toffees.
