sum of sons age = x

father age is 3x

20 years later their age will be x+20 & 3×+20

thus 3x+20 = x

3x - x = -20

2×=-20

The age of his father would be 30 years.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the sum of ages of his two children = x

Let the father's age be 3x

After 20 years,

Father's age = 3x+20

Sum of ages of his two children = x+40

According to question, we get that

3x+20=x+40\\\\3x-x=40-20\\\\2x=20\\\\x=\dfrac{20}{2}=10

Hence, the age of his father would be 3×10 = 30 years.
