a father said to his eldest son" I'm thrice as old as your youngest sister and when i was as old as you, you were as old as youngest sister". If the youngest sister is 17 years old, how many years ago was her elder brother born?

secondly, father said that we he was as old as his son. that is x years old, his son was as old as his youngest sister that is 17 years old.

hence acc' to first statement,

age gap = father's age - son's age = 51 - x

Acc' to second statement,

age gap=  father's age - son's age = x - 17

both age gaps must be same.

hence,  51 - x = x - 17

solving this we get 34.

thus, age of elder brother is 34 years.
