During the presentation he became a part of the famous photograph involving the winners of the race Tommie Smith and John Carlos of African-American origin in the Black Power Salute controversy. Both the athletes raised a black-gloved fist when the national anthem of USA was played to mark their protest against  ill treatment by the US against Blacks.
