Given info : A fiber cable has an acceptance angle of 30° and a core index of refraction of 1.4

To find : The refractive index of the cladding.

solution : using formula,

sinα = √{μ₁² - μ₂²}

where α is angle of acceptance.

μ₁ is core index of refractive index

and μ₂ is refractive index of cladding.

here, α = 30° , μ₁ = 1.4

⇒sin30° = √{(1.4)² - μ₂²}

⇒(1/2)² = (1.4)² - μ₂²

⇒(0.25) - 1.96 = - μ₂²

⇒μ₂² = 1.71

⇒μ₂ = √(1.71) = 1.308

Therefore the refractive index of the cladding is 1.308
