A filder pull his hand backward after catching the cricket ball why

While catching a ball a fielder pulls his hands backwards in order to increase the time of contact of his hands and ball while the velocity of the ball is reduced to zero.
This decreases the ball's acceleration and the impact of ball on fielder's hands is reduced. ANSWER.
