A flask contains argon and chlorine in the ratio of 2:1 by mass. The temperature of the mixture is 27
c. Obtain the ratio of (i) average kinetic energy per molecule, and (ii) root mean square speed vrms of the molecules of the two gases. Atomic mass of argon = 39.9 u; molecular mass of chlorine = 70.9 u.

Hey dear,

● Answer -
1) Ratio of kinetic energy = 3.55
2) Ratio of RMS velocity = 1.88

● Explanation -
# Given -
T = 27°C = 300 K
W1/W2 = 2 g
M1 = 40 g/mol
M2 = 71 g/mol

# Solution -
Ratio of number of moles -
n1/n2 = W1M2 / M1W2
n1/n2 = 2 × 71 / 40
n1/n2 = 3.55

Ratio of kinetic energy -
KE1/KE2 = n1/n2
KE1/KE2 = 3.55

Ratio of RMS velocity -
vrms1/vrms2 = √(n1/n2)
vrms1/vrms2 = √(3.55)
vrms1/vrms2 = 1.88

Hope this helps you ...
