A flask filled with water at room temperature is sealed with cork fitted with a glass tube so that the level of water appears at a short distance up the tube. Flask is dipped vertically in a hot water bath with the glass tube outside.

1) Describe the observations.
2) Give a reason for your observations in part (i).

☞The density of the water is highest at 4°C.

☞So the at winter the water having temperature 4°C goes to the bottom of the tank and the water having less temperature will be at the surface.

☞Hence the freezing starts at the surface.

☞Also since the ice is lighter than water ice also stays at the surface.
