A food stall owner was preparing dough for making bhaturas. He added a pinch of
yeast and sugar to the dough and left it in a warm place. After few hours, the dough had risen
(a) Why did the dough rise?
(b) Why was sugar added to the dough?

  1. the dough rises due to the CO2 gas releases during anaerobic respiration done by the yeast on the breaking down of sugar
  2. for release of CO2 from yeast sugar is required. As it provides food for yeast to produce CO2.
