A force of 10 N produces an acceleration of 8 ms-2 on a mass m1 and an acceleration of 30 ms-2 on a mass m2. What acceleration would the same force provide if both the masses are tied together?

Answer:

Acceleration when the masses are tied up = 6.33 m/s²

Explanation:

According to Newton's Second Law of Motion,

F = ma

Given, F = 10N

First Case

a1 = 8m/s²

Then, m1 = F / a1 = 10/8 = 5/4 kg = 1.25 kg

Second Case

a2 = 30m/s²

Then, m2 = F / a2 = 10/30 = 1/3 kg = 0.33kg

If the masses are tied up, then m = m1 + m2 = 1.25 + 0.33

= 1.58kg

F = ma

a = F/m = 10 ÷ 1.58

which is approximately 6.33 m/s²
