Given,

Force = 10 N, works on a ball,

for a distance = 5 m.

Force is perpendicular to the displacement of the ball.

To find,

Total work done by the force.

Solution,

The work done by a force on an object is defined as the product of the force applied and the displacement of the body in the direction of the applied force.

Let a body (e. g. a box), be placed on the earth's surface and a force of 'F' newtons is applied to move it. Say the force is inclined to the horizontal surface. Due to this force let this body is displaced by 'd' meters.

Then, the work done by the applied force 'F' on this body (W) will be given as,

W = (F\cos\theta) \cdot d

Or, W = Fd\cos\theta     ...(1)

Where,

θ = angle of inclination of 'F' with the direction in which the body is displaced.

For the given ball,

F = 10 N,

d = 5 m, and

θ = 90° (∵ force is perpendicular to the displacement of the ball).

Substituting these values in equation (1), we get,

W = (10)(5)(\cos 90\textdegree)

Since \cos 90 = 0,

W = 0.

Therefore the total work done by the perpendicular force on the ball will be 0.
