Given :

Applied force = 50N

Initial momentum = zero

To Find :

Final momentum of body after 3 and 6 seconds.

Solution :

❖ As per newton's second law of motion force is measured as the rate of change of linear momentum.

Mathematically, F = dp / dt

  • F denotes force
  • dp denotes change in momentum
  • dt denotes time interval

Momentum of body after 3 s :

➙ F × t₁ = p₂ - p₁

➙ 50 × 3 = p₂ - 0

p₂ = 150 N s

Momentum of body after 6 s :

➙ F × t₂ = p₂ - p₁

➙ 50 × 6 = p₂ - 0

p₂ = 300 N s

What is momentum?

  • Momentum is measured as the product of mass and velocity.
  • It is a vector quantity having both magnitude as well as direction.
  • SI unit : N s
