A force of 5N gives a mass m1 and acceleration of 8m/s^2 and mass m2 an acceleration of 24m/s^2. What acceleration would it give if both the masses are tied together?

Answer.

Given, Force, F = 5 N

Acceleration of body of mass m₁ = 8 ms⁻²

Acceleration of body of mass m₂ = 24 ms⁻²

We know, F = ma

So, m₁ = 5/8 kg

and, m₂ = 5/24 kg

If the masses are tied, total mass, M

= m₁+ m₂ = 5/6 kg

∴ Acceleration produced, a = 5/(5/6)

= 6 ms⁻²
