Using the formulae : F = ma where F is the force, m the mass and a the acceleration we can get m₁ and m₂.
Since F is same for the two scenarios we use 5N to get the two masses.
m = F/a
m₁ = 5/8 = 0.625Kg
m₂ = 5/24 = 0.2083Kg
When the two masses are joined and Same force applied we get a as:
m₁ + m₂ = 0.2083 + 0.625 = 0.8333Kg
a = F/m
5 / 0.8333 = 6.0002m/s²
