Given:-

  • A fraction becomes 1/3 when 1 is added to the numerator.
  • It becomes 1/4 when 8 is added to the denominator.

Solution:-

 {\sf \blue {let \: the \: fraction \: be \:  \frac{x}{y} }}

ATQ:-

  \sf \large\frac{x  -  1}{y}  =  \frac{1}{3}

 \sf \large{3x - y =  3\qquad   \qquad\bf \longrightarrow {\blue{(i)}}}

 \sf \large \frac{x}{y}  + 8 =  \frac{1}{4}

 \sf \large{4x - y =  8\qquad   \qquad\bf \longrightarrow {\blue{(ii)}}}

Subtracting equation (i) from equation (ii).

We get the value of x as 5

Putting the value in equation:-

15 - y = 3

y = 12

{\boxed {\sf \blue{ \therefore  \: the  \: fraction \:  is \:  \frac{5}{12}  }}}
