Answer:

Required fraction is a / b i.e. 7 / 9

Step-by-step explanation:

Let,

Numerator of the original fraction be a.

Denominator of the original fraction be b.

Thus, original should be a / b.

According to the question : If 1 is added to both numerator and denominator, original fraction ( i.e. a / b ) becomes 4 / 5.

It means :

= > ( Original numerator + 1 ) / ( Original denominator + 1 ) = 4 / 5

= > ( a + 1 ) / ( b + 1 ) = 4 / 5

= > 5( a + 1 ) = 4( b + 1 )

= > 5a + 5 = 4b + 4

= > 5a + 5 - 4 = 4b

= > ( 5a + 1 ) / 4 = b ... ( 1 )

Also, if however 5 is subtracted from both numerator and denominator the fraction becomes 1/2.

It means :

= > ( Original numerator - 5 ) / ( Original denominator - 5 ) = 1 / 2

= > ( a - 5 ) / ( b - 5 ) = 1 / 2

= > 2( a - 5 ) = b - 5

= > 2a - 10 = b - 5

= > 2a - b = 10 - 5

= > 2a - b = 5

= > 2a - ( 5a + 1 ) / 4 = 5 { from ( 1 ) }

= > 8a - 5a - 1 = 20

= > 8a - 5a = 20 + 1

= > 3a = 21

= > a = 7

Substituting the value of a in ( 1 ) :

= > b = [ 5( 7 ) + 1 ] / 4

= > b = ( 35 + 1 ) / 4

= > b = 36 / 4

= > b = 9

Hence the required fraction is a / b i.e. 7 / 9.
