A fruit-seller had some apples. He sells 40% of them and still has 420 apples. Find the
number of apples he had originally.
In an examination, 72% of the total examinees passed. If the number of failures is 392, find
the total number of examinees.​

(i) He had 700 apples originally

(i) 420 = 100% - 40% = 60%

Apples he originally had = 40% + 60%

Let 40% apples = x

60 : 420 :: 40 : x

Solve by mean - extreme method,

60x = 16800

x = 16800/60

x = 280

Total apples = 420 + 280 = 700

(ii) Failed examines = 392 = 100% - 72% = 28%

Passed examines = x

72 : x :: 28 : 392

Solve by mean - extreme method,

28x = 28224

x = 28224/28

x = 1008

Total examines = 392 + 1008

                          = 1400
