A gaseous mixture contains 56g nitrogen 44g carbon dioxide and 16g methane the total pressure of mixture is 720mm what is the partial pressure of methane

p= partial pressure

x = mole fraction=\frac{\text {moles of that substance}}{\text {Total moles}}[/tex]

Moles is calculated by using the formula:

Moles=\frac{\text{Given mass}}{\text{Molar mass}}

{\text {Moles of} N_2}=\frac{56g}{28g/mol}=2mole

{\text {Moles of} CO_2}=\frac{44g}{44g/mol}=1mole

{\text {Moles of} CH_4}=\frac{16g}{16g/mol}=1mole

Total moles = 2+1+1=4

Mole fraction of methane=[/tex]\frac{1}{4}=0.25[/tex]

p_{methane}=0.25\times 720mmHg=180mmHg
