Here we are given that the girl brought x flowers for y dollars

then the cost of 1 flower = \frac{y}{x}

cost of 12 flowers = 12(\frac{y}{x} )

We are given that x+10 flowers cost $2

then the cost of 1 flower = \frac{2}{(x+10)}

cost of 12 flowers = 12. \frac{2}{x+10}

= \frac{24}{x+10}

Now we know that the difference between these two costs is 80 cents or \frac{4}{5} dollars

12\frac{y}{x} - \frac{24}{x+10} = \frac{4}{5}

We use trial and error method to plug in the x and y values ( if this question gives you options for answer, plug in those options to find which value solves the equation)

x=5 and y=1 is the solution for this question using trial and error method.

12.\frac{1}{5} -\frac{24}{5+10} =\frac{4}{5}

\frac{12}{5} -\frac{24}{15} = \frac{4}{5}

\frac{36-24}{15} = \frac{4}{5}

\frac{4}{5} =\frac{4}{5}

Hence 5,1 is the right solution

Answer:

Its very simple if you know 1 dollor= 100cent. Now lets solve the question.

80 cent save for 1 dozen(12 flowers) then

200 cent (2 dollor) save 2.5 dozen (30 flowers) (calculate as 12/80*200=30)

Now 2 dollor save 30 flowers then

1 dollor will save 15 flowers

By question we got an exuation as

X+10=2dollor or y

And we know 1 dollor is equal to 15 flowers so by that

5+10=1 is our ans

So x=5 and y=1.
