We have to find the distance of her from the starting point.

Let a girl starts walking from point P.

Step 1 : A girl walks 500 m towards East.

see diagram, line PQ shown in the diagram is distance travelled by the girl towards East.

step 2 : then she walks 1200 m towards north.

line QR shown in the diagram is distance travelled by the girl towards north.

step 3 : line PR is her distance from the starting point.

from Pythagoras theorem,

PR² = PQ² + QR²

⇒PR² = (500)² + (1200)²

⇒PR² = 250000 + 1440000

⇒PR² = 1690000

⇒PR = 1300 m

Therefore the girl's distance from the starting point is 1300.
