Thymus is called the Clock Of Ageing

At birth , the thymus remains large. With gradual course of time , it reduces in size and becomes atrophic.

The main function of thymus :

  • Training of the T - Lymphocytes into effector cells responsible for providing immunity to the body.
  • They are mainly responsible for Cell-Mediated immunity.
  • Also known as the School of Lymphocytes

With age , the thymus regresses and hence the immune defence against antigens in elderly persons also decreases.
