A glass beaker holds exactly 1 L "at" 0^@ C (a) What is its volume at 50^@ C ? (b) If the beaker is filled with mercury at 0^@ C, what volume of mercury overflows ehen the temperature is 50^@ C ? alpha _ g = 8.3 xx 10^-6 per ^@ C and gamma_Hg = 1.82 xx 10^-4 per ^@ C.

The volume of mercury overflow when the temperature is 50° C is  0.008 L

Explanation:

The volume of beaker after the temperature change is

V(beaker) = V0(1 + 3αgΔθ)

= (1)[1+3×8.3×10-6×50]

= 1.001 L

(b) volume of mercury at 50∘C is

V(mercury) = V0(1+γHgΔθ)

= (1) [1+1.82×10-4×50]

= 1.009 L

The overflow is thus 1.009 - 1.0001 = 0.008 L or 8 mL

Hence the volume of mercury overflow when the temperature is 50° C is  0.008 L

Answer:

1.001 L and 8mL

Explanation:

(a) The volume of beaker after the temperature change is

V V beaker g = + 0 (1 3a Dq)

= ( ) [ + × × × ] – 1 1 3 10 50 6 8.3

= 1.001 L Ans.

(b) Volume of mercury at 50°C is

V V mercury Hg = + 0 (1 g Dq)

= ( ) [ + × × ]

= 1.009 L

The overflow is thus 1.009 − 1.001= 0.008 L or 8 mL
