A glass block of dimensions 10 cm x 10 cm x 4 cm and weight 8 N rests with its

sides 10 cm x 10 cm in contact with top of a table. Calculate the pressure exerted.

If the block is tilted and allowed to rest on the surface on side 10 cm x 4 cm, will

the pressure increase, decrease or remain the same?

Answer:

area=10*10=100sqcm

=pressure=800pascals

if the block is tilted the pressure will decrease because surface area is reduced

The pressure which is exerted on the  top of the table is equal to 800 Pa

Explanation:

  • Pressure can be defined as the force per unit area. The force remains constant because of the weight of the body D which is equal to 8 Newton.
  • However the area changes on change in the the surface area of the table on which the object is placed. During the first case the pressure is equal to 8/(0.1x0.1/ = 800Pa , but in the second case the force is equal to 8/(0.1 x 0.04) = 2000 Pa.
  • hence in the second case there is increase in the pressure exerted
