a glass cube of dimensions 10 cm*10cm*4cm and weight 8N rests with its sides 10cm*10cm in contact with top of a table. Calculate the pressure exerted if the cuboid is tilted and allowed to rest on the surface on side 10cm*4cm. Will the pressure increase, decrease or remain the same.

Given info : A glass cube of dimensions 10 cm × 10 cm × 4 cm and weight 8N rests with its sides 10cm × 10cm in contact with top of a table.
To find :
- the pressure exerted if the cuboid is tilted and allowed to rest on the surface on side 10cm × 4 cm is ...
- will the pressure increase, decrease or remain the same ?
Solution : pressure is the force applied on a body per unit area.
∴ initial pressure exerted on the table by glass cube, P₀ = weight of glass cube/area of contacting surface.
= 8N/(10 cm × 10 cm)
= 8/(100 × 10⁻⁴ m²) [ ∵ 1cm² = 10⁻⁴ m² ]
= 800 N/m²
pressure after tilting the cuboid, P₁ = weight of glass cube/area of contacting surface.
= 8N/(10 cm × 4 cm)
= 2000 N/m²
therefore the pressure exerted if the cuboid is tilted and allowed to rest on the surface on side 10cm × 4cm, is 2000 N/m².
pressure changes from 800N/m² to 2000 N/m² hence pressure increases.
