given , refractive index 1.5
thickness of slab = 3 cm
distance of person from the paper = 5 cm
therefore, the actual real depth is =5-3=2

we know that ,

apparent depth / real depth = relative refractive index

therefore , the apparent depth is 3 cm

hope it helps you. (;

vaibhavsharmac: should I use apparent depth=t(1-1/refractive index)
heyshona25: yed
heyshona25: yes
heyshona25: apparent depth = real depth × refractive index of 2 medium / refractive index of 1 medium
yoshitapant: But Ans is 4.

Given , refractive index 1.5

thickness of slab = 3 cm

distance of person from the paper = 5 cm

therefore, the actual real depth =5-3=2

we know that ,

apparent depth / real depth = relative refractive index

Then apparant depth =d/n =3/(3/2)=2

So the distance of the mark will appear is 2+2=4

Answer is 4
