Plankton is the largest group of plants and animals who move by drifting on the ocean surface. There are two types of plankton. Phytoplankton uses photosunthesis to produce energy to live and grow. Zooplankton are microscopic animals. Nekton are free swimmers who can move through the ocean layers to search for food. That is why they live on many levels in the ocean. For instance, whales, fish, and dolphins. Benthos live on or in the ocean bottom. Some of them are attached to the ocean floor but some can move and swim. For instance, crabs, oysters, and clams.
