A grain mill earns a profit of 8 per bag of rice sold and a loss of 4 per bag of wheat sold. The mill
sells 3500 bags of rice and 9000 bags of wheat grains in a week. What is its profit or loss?
Answers
let cost price of one rice and one wheat bag be x and y
selling price of 3500 rice bags
= 3500x + 8 × 3500
selling price of 9000 bag of wheat
= 9000y - 4 × 9000
total cost price = CP = 3500x + 9000y
total selling price = SP
= 3500x + 9000y + 8×3500 - 4×9000
= 3500x + 9000y - 8000
as SP is small than CP , it is loss
Given data : A grain mill earns a profit of Rs 8 per bag of rice sold and a loss of Rs 4 per bag of wheat sold. The mill sells 3500 bags of rice and 9000 bags of wheat grains in a week.
To find : What is its profit or loss ?
Solution :
⟹ profit of grain mill = Rs 8 per bag of rice
⟹ loss of grain mill = Rs 4 per bag of wheat
Here we know ;
- In a week grain mill sells 3500 bags of rice. and
- In a week grain mill sells 9000 bags of wheat.
Now, to find cost of 3500 bags of rice
⟹ cost of 3500 bags of rice = 3500 * 8
⟹ cost of 3500 bags of rice = Rs 28000
similarly,
⟹ cost of 9000 bags of wheat = 9000 * 4
⟹ cost of 9000 bags of wheat = Rs 36000
Hence, profit of grain mill on 3500 bags of rice in a week is Rs 28000 and loss of grain mill on 9000 bags of wheat in a week is Rs 36000.
Here we know loss of grain mill is greater than profit of grain mill. { loss of grain mill > profit of grain mill } Hence there is a loss in the grain mill.
Now,
⟹ Loss = cost of 9000 bags of wheat - cost of 3500 bags of rice
⟹ Loss = 36000 - 28000
⟹ Loss = Rs 8000
Answer : Hence, loss of the grain is Rs 8000 in a week.
