A green coloured hydrated metallic salt on heating loses its water of crystallisation molecules and gives the smell of burning sulphur. Identify the salt and write the equation.

the salt is FeSO4 ( Ferrous sulphate )

the reaction takes place in two steps :

first step:

FeSO4.7H2 -----heat----> FeSO4 + 7H2O

second step:

FeSO4 ----heat--->     Fe2O3        +       SO2             +        SO3

                            (Ferric Oxide)   (Sulphur Dioxide)   (Sulphur Trioxide)
