The middle class were the people who earned money by overseas trade etc.They believed that privileges must be given in regard of merit and not of birth. Even philosophers wrote about it and it was discussed extensively in coffee shops. Moreover, people who believed that there shouldn't be discrimination according to birth started to form associations unions and parties which of course was a threat. Hence we can say that a growing middle class envisages an end to privileges.
