There are two answers that can be given to this question.:

1. KERN PLASM THEORY:- According to this theory a cell divides when it has grown so large that the nucleus cannot control it. You see, the nucleus makes enzymes and these are responsible for the whole of the metabolic activity of the cell and if these enzymes fall short...., then definitely the cell will get damaged So, there is an inbuilt mechanism in the cell which triggers it to divide.

2. VOLUME SURFACE AREA THEORY :- According to this theory the the cell membrane of the cell is the source of the materials needed by it as the cell grows its volume increases more than its surface area so the cell membrane cannot exchange sufficient material required for the proper functioning of the whole cell and for this reason the cell divides so that it can maintain this ratio...
