according to momentum conservation,

mass of gun* recoil velocity = mass of bullet* velocity of bullet.

4* V = 40/1000 * 500

V=5 m/s (backwards)

opposite to the direction of bullet firing.

Momentum of gun = Momentum of bullet

mass of gun + recoil velocity of gun = mass of bullet + velocity of bullet

4 × v = 40/1000 × 500

4v = 20

v = 20/4

v = 5

velocity of recoil = 5 m/s
