u1 = 40 ms–1,
u2 = 0,
t = 0.01 s
The force of nail on the hammer,
F = Change in momentum time
F = m(v - u) / t
= 0.4 (0-40)/0.01

= –1600 N

The negative sign means that the force of nail on the hammer is acting in the direction opposite to that of hammer.
