A line segment has a fixed length.

To properly understand this answer, we have to compare line, line segment and ray, with each other.

Line, Line segment and Ray (Comparison) :

  • Line : A line has no endpoints. (i.e. its length is infinite)
  • Line segment : It has two fixed endpoints. (i.e. its length is measurable)
  • Ray : It has only one endpoint, and extends infinitely in one direction. (i.e. its length is also infinite)

So, from the above mentioned comparison, we can say that only a line segment's length can be measured.

On the other hand the line and ray extends infinitely in two or one directions, respectively. So, the length of line or ray is practically immeasurable.

Which finally implies, only line segment (which has two fixed endpoints) has a fixed length. (this fixed length is equal to the distance between the two endpoints of a line segment)

Hence, a line segment has a fixed length.
