A highly elevated Land from the surroundings with very steep slopes is known as Plateau.

Explanation:

The plateau is that typical land form of the surface, which is of sufficient height from its surrounding site and whose top part is wide and flat.

The height of the plateau generally ranges from 300 to 500 feet.

Plateaus are often of the following types-

  • Inland Plateau – Plateau built between the ranges. Such plateaus are surrounded all around. Such as the Tibetan Plateau, Bolivia, Peru etc.
  • Mountains Plateau – The flat area between the mountain floor and the plain.
  • Continental Plateau – When plateaus within the earth, laccoliths emerge on the surface due to erosion of the surface, then such plateaus are formed. The formation of such plateaus is caused by the deforming forces rising above a wide terrain of the ground. Such as the Plateau of the South, Kaimur, Ranchi in India and the Plateau of Karnataka.
  • Coastal Plateau – A plateau located in the coastal part of the sea.  Plateaus built as a result of the movement, such as Rajgarh dome (India).
  • Piedmont Plateau – The plateau at the foothills of the higher mountains is called ‘Piedmont’ plateau. Such as Piedmont (USA), Patagonia (South America) etc.
