A hollow container has external volume 1000cm cube and a mass 100 g
(b)Explain why it would not sink in water if the same mass of calculated above, were tied to the outside of the container???

ANS a)

Here, mass m=100kg, 

density ρ=500kgm−3

Volume of the body, V=ρm

                                      =500100=0.2m3

Weight of water displaced 

=Vρg

=0.2×103×g

=200gkgwt

Mass of water displaced =200kg

∴ the additional mass which can be added to body, so that body can sink 

=200−100=100kg
