let the cost of the horse be x n the cost of the cart be y

A/Q , x + y = 1600. -----1)

and given that ,

y. = 1/3 x

=) x. = 3y
putting it in equation 1)

=) 3y +y. = 1600

=) 4y. = 1600
=) y. = 1200

x. = 400
