Hose P and Q can fill the tank in 9 mins (Given)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solution:

Hose P can fill the tank in 12 mins

⇒ 1 min = 1/12 of the tank

Hose P and Q can fill the tank in 9 mins

⇒ 1 min = 1/9 of the tank

Find the work done by Hose Q in a min

1 min = 1/9 - 1/12 = 1/36

Find the number of mins for Hose Q to fill up the tank alone:

1/36 of the tank = 1 min

36/36 of the tank = 1 x 36 = 36 mins

Answer: Hose Q needs 36 mins to fill up the tank alone.
