A hot-air balloon is ascending at the rate of 12 m/s and is 80 m above the ground when a package is dropped over the side. With what speed does it hit the ground?

Applying Newton's 3rd law of kinematics -

v^2 = u^2 + 2as

v^2 = 12^2 + 2(-10)(-80)

v^2 = 144 + 1600

v^2 = 1744

v = 41.76 m/s

Therefore, the ballon will reach earth with speed of 41.76 m/s.
