(a) Conversion reactions -

(i) Ethanol to Ethene -

Ethene is obtained by adding conc.H2SO4 to ethanol.

CH3-CH2-OH --> CH3=CH2 + H2O.

(ii) Ethanol to Ethanoic acid -

Ethanol on reaction with acidified potassium dichromate gives ethanoic acid.

CH3CH2OH + 2[O] → CH3COOH + H2O

(b) Example of reactions -

(i) Substitution reaction -

Methane on reaction with chlorine gives methyl chloride.

CH4 + Cl2 --> CH3Cl + HCl

(ii) Saponification reaction -

Ethanoic acid on reaction with aq.NaOH gives sodium ethanoate.

C2H5COOH + NaOH --> C2H5COONa + H2O

(iii) Combustion reaction -

When methane burns in air, it forms CO2 & water.

CH4 + 2O2 --> CO2 + 2H2O
